“Edmonton Marathon Apologizes for Extended Race Course”

Date:

Two days post the conclusion of the Edmonton Marathon, the race director issues an apology following the revelation of a miscalculation in accounting for detours that resulted in the race courses being longer than intended. The acknowledgment validates the suspicions of numerous runners.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Edmonton Marathon race director Tom Keogh disclosed that the half-marathon and marathon courses were actually 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh explained that an error was identified during a thorough review of the course, specifically related to the calculation of detour-related adjustments.

Keogh took full responsibility for the error, expressing sincere apologies for the oversight. Prior to the statement, concerns had been raised by elite and amateur runners about the accuracy of the race distances. Despite initial assurances that the courses were accurately measured and confirmed on race day, an error was admitted by Keogh on Tuesday.

Athletics Canada, the governing body for the sport, had initially expressed confidence in the course measurement process. Keogh mentioned ongoing discussions with Athletics Canada and other relevant parties to address the implications of the error, particularly for runners aiming to qualify for prestigious events like the Boston Marathon.

One such runner, Mitch Walz from Calgary, had trained rigorously for the Edmonton Marathon with hopes of meeting the Boston Marathon qualifying standard. However, due to the extended course, his finishing time fell short of his target. Walz expressed disappointment but also acknowledged the effort he had put into the race.

Keogh emphasized the significance of participants’ dedication and goals, pledging to review certification processes to prevent similar errors in the future. Despite the setback, Walz remains hopeful of earning a spot in the Boston Marathon and indicated a willingness to consider participating in the Edmonton Marathon again in the future.
