“Fodor’s Red List: 7 Destinations to Avoid Due to Overtourism”

Date:

British tourists are being advised to steer clear of seven destinations due to overtourism concerns. While travel can be enriching, it can also have negative impacts such as overcrowding, environmental strain, and increased property prices.

Fodor’s, an American travel publication, annually releases a ‘red list’ highlighting places facing excessive tourism pressure. The list aims to encourage a break in visiting these locations to alleviate strain on the environment and local communities.

Among the destinations to avoid this year is Kenya, which has seen a significant increase in tourism post-Covid, with plans to further boost inbound arrivals. However, overtourism has taken a toll on cities like Mombasa, leading to resource depletion, overcrowding, and environmental degradation.

Antarctica, known for its pristine environment, is also facing challenges from tourism. Conservation efforts have been made to protect the region, but increasing visitor numbers raise concerns about the impact on wildlife and ecosystems.

Isola Sacra near Rome has become a popular tourist spot, attracting visitors with its ancient Roman Necropolis. Plans for a new port in the area have sparked controversy and contributed to its inclusion on the No List.

The Canary Islands, a favorite winter sun destination for many, have also been affected by overtourism, leading to protests and concerns about the environmental impact.

Mexico City has experienced backlash from tourists, with protests against gentrification and rising rents turning violent. The city’s tourism industry is facing scrutiny and backlash from locals.

In Switzerland, the Jungfrau region is struggling to balance tourism growth with environmental conservation and local quality of life. Environmental strain and overcrowding are starting to impact the region’s natural beauty.

Glacier National Park in the US is facing challenges due to climate change, with glaciers disappearing rapidly. The park’s popularity for last-chance tourism is causing congestion, waste issues, and disturbances to wildlife.
