“Freely Set to Challenge Sky Q with Free TV Box”

Date:

For more than a decade, Sky Q has maintained its position as a leading TV device in the UK. Its extensive recording capabilities have kept users loyal. However, a potential competitor may soon emerge, offering similar features without requiring any subscription fees.

Freely, integrated into many new televisions, allows households to access live and on-demand content without an aerial. This is made possible by streaming content directly to the screen via the internet.

Initially, acquiring Freely necessitated buying a new TV, but this is expected to change soon, posing a challenge to Sky Q.

The team behind Freely, known for Freeview as well, has revealed plans to introduce a dedicated set-top box that can connect to existing TVs. Recently, a Humax-made Freely device, offering free access to television and the ability to record shows like Sky Q, has surfaced online.

Priced starting at under £250, the box may seem costly, but it eliminates any further expenses as all Freely content is free to view.

While an exact release date for the new Freely boxes remains undisclosed, they are expected to hit stores soon.

Although the online listing has been removed, indicating a premature posting, updates will be provided as soon as available.

Earlier this year, Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, expressed: “Freely was designed to democratize free TV access. Introducing ‘plug-in and stream’ devices is a crucial step to ensure more households can enjoy the complete Freely experience without upgrading their TV or subscribing.”

Despite offering features akin to Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q, Freely falls short in terms of content variety compared to Sky. It lacks access to premium sports, movies, or box sets from channels like Sky Atlantic or Sky Max. Additionally, it does not support services such as Netflix within the platform.

To access premium content, users must opt for one of Sky’s plans, which now start from £15 monthly and often include Netflix.
