Glacier Retreat: Mount Robson’s Berg Lake Connection Lost

Mount Robson’s Berg Glacier in British Columbia is undergoing significant changes, with recent findings showing that the glacier has retreated to the point where it no longer extends to touch Berg Lake. Joseph Shea, a geography associate professor at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), observed this transformation during a field project on the mountain this summer and captured the moment in a photograph. This shift signifies a notable alteration, signaling the ongoing glacier changes in the region.

Situated on the north face of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies near the Alberta border, the Berg Glacier historically reached Berg Lake, where ice fragments would break off the lower edge and fall into the lake. Berg Lake derived its name from the resulting icebergs that could be seen floating on its turquoise waters, even during the summer months. The area, including the popular 23-kilometre Berg Lake Trail, attracts outdoor enthusiasts with its breathtaking scenery, often selling out camping spots for the entire summer within hours of reservations opening in the spring.

While the separation between the glacier and the lake is not anticipated to impact the lake’s water level significantly, it does suggest that Berg Glacier may no longer release as many icebergs directly into Berg Lake. Despite this change, Shea reassures visitors that Mount Robson remains a spectacular destination and that the visitor experience will not be drastically altered. However, the detachment serves as a poignant visual representation of the effects of climate change.

Research led by UNBC scientist Brian Menounos revealed alarming trends in glacier melt. Between 1985 and 2021, approximately 22% of the surface area of glaciers in Western Canada and Switzerland had vanished. Climate change-induced events, such as the record-breaking heat wave in 2021, severely damaged parts of the Berg Lake Trail, leading to flooding and the evacuation of hikers. Following extensive repairs, the trail fully reopened in June 2025.

Efforts are underway to address the challenges posed by climate change, with initiatives like setting up real-time weather stations in collaboration with B.C. Parks. These stations will collect crucial data on snowpack, temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation, aiding park operations and enhancing safety measures for visitors. Real-time weather data is expected to be accessible by fall or winter 2026, providing valuable insights for managing the park and mitigating potential risks associated with changing environmental conditions.
