A significant Pacific Ocean warming event known as El Niño, also referred to as a “Godzilla” El Niño or a “super” El Niño, has returned, impacting global weather patterns. This occurrence comes during a period of excessive heat across different parts of the world. July marked the hottest month on record for North America and Europe, leading to numerous heat-related fatalities, dried-up water bodies, and extensive wildfires, including in Canada.
While the scorching summer coincided with the onset of El Niño, climate scientists clarify that El Niño is not solely responsible for these extreme weather events. However, they suggest that the interaction between this natural phenomenon and human-induced climate change could exacerbate extreme weather conditions.
Experts like Josh Willis, a NASA climate scientist, anticipate significant and widespread impacts from El Niño, urging people to prepare for potentially extreme weather occurrences. El Niños typically occur every three to seven years, affecting weather patterns globally by altering air and ocean temperatures.
Although the current El Niño started forming in May and June, its full impact on regions like Canada is expected to peak later in the fall and winter. Scientists, including Muhammad Azhar Ehsan from Columbia University, highlight the unprecedented nature of this El Niño, potentially rivaling the intensity of past events in 2015-16 and 1997-98.
Projections indicate that regions like Canada and the northern U.S. may experience a warmer winter due to El Niño, with varied impacts on precipitation patterns. Countries near the El Niño region, such as Peru and Indonesia, are already facing consequences like heavy rains, flooding, and prolonged droughts.
El Niño’s influence extends to the hurricane season, with fewer storms expected in the Atlantic Ocean but heightened storm activity in the Eastern Pacific. The interaction between El Niño and the current climate crisis could lead to unprecedented weather patterns, challenging existing scientific predictions.
Experts warn that the effects of this El Niño are likely to persist well into the following year, as the accumulated heat from the ocean transfers into the atmosphere. The ongoing climate change crisis is further intensifying the impacts of El Niño, making it imperative to address these challenges for the foreseeable future.
