A rapidly spreading wildfire in northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday destroyed homes, hindered firefighting efforts, and prompted the evacuation of approximately 90,000 individuals. The fire, dubbed the Hawk Fire, started on Saturday and expanded to over 60 square kilometers in the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest.
Authorities reported that at least six individuals, including three first responders and three civilians, sustained injuries. While officials indicated that the fire was “human-caused,” they did not disclose specific details on the origin of the fire.
With shifting winds complicating containment efforts, around 42,000 residents were instructed to evacuate immediately, with an additional 45,000 individuals placed on evacuation warning. The evacuation zone extended to the outskirts of the University of Nevada, with officials stressing the urgency of leaving due to the unpredictable nature of the fire.
One resident, Cari Kieffer, shared her heartbreaking experience of witnessing her home engulfed in flames. She recounted how her family scrambled to rescue their pets and essential belongings as the fire rapidly approached their neighborhood, leaving their house in ruins.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and deployed the Nevada National Guard to support firefighting efforts. In response to the crisis, 800 fire personnel, two helicopter crews, and 60 troops were mobilized to assist in safeguarding the affected areas.
As the fire continued to spread, power outages affected nearly 10,000 customers in Washoe County, with sections of U.S. Route 395 being shut down due to the blaze. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center was opened as a shelter for evacuees, while local casinos offered accommodations at discounted rates for those displaced by the wildfire.
The fire’s rapid progression was exacerbated by changing winds and dry conditions, leading to a surge in fire incidents across Nevada. With multiple wildfires erupting in the region, emergency services faced challenges in containing the blazes and ensuring the safety of residents.
The University of Nevada and medical facilities in the vicinity took precautionary measures, evacuating patients and closely monitoring the evolving situation. Washoe County emergency officials worked diligently to manage the crisis, coordinating evacuations and providing support to those affected by the devastating wildfire.
