A stray bullet fired by a man on a moped claimed the life of a 7-month-old baby in a stroller on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities. The tragic incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. as two men rode down a street in Brooklyn on a moped, with the passenger firing at least two shots towards a group of people, including adults and children at a street corner. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported from the shooting.
Following the shooting, the moped riders attempted to flee but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away. Both men were thrown off the vehicle with such force that the passenger lost both of his shoes, as confirmed by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
One of the men involved in the crash sustained injuries and was taken into custody at a hospital for an unrelated investigation, while the other man managed to escape and was still being pursued by law enforcement at the time. Authorities indicated that the shooting was likely tied to gang activity and that the infant was an unintended victim.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed deep sympathy for the family of the deceased child, emphasizing the profound loss experienced. Police investigators utilized surveillance cameras in the neighborhood to trace the path of the moped post-shooting, with Tisch calling the incident a shocking tragedy that deeply affects the community.
Despite an overall decline in crime rates in New York City, this heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need to combat gun violence, as highlighted by Mayor Mamdani.
