“Iran and Oman Forge Shipping Deal Amid U.S. Pressure”

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump once again issued a threat aimed at Oman while Iran announced collaborative efforts with the Gulf state to establish a strategy for overseeing shipping activities through the Strait of Hormuz. The complete reopening of this crucial waterway remains a key demand from the United States. As the 60-day negotiation window for brokering a peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran neared its end, no extension was mentioned, leaving both parties seemingly no closer to a resolution than when discussions began. Here are the latest developments on Monday regarding the ongoing tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

**Iran’s Progress with Oman:**
Iran disclosed that it has reached a consensus with Oman on a plan concerning ship transit via the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the two nations. Efforts are underway to finalize the specifics for a joint statement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei informed reporters in Tehran about the mutual understanding reached regarding the transit route map. While details were not fully disclosed, existing information hints at a deal that would allow ships to enter the strait near Iran and exit close to Oman, facilitating transit without payment of fees or tolls during a transitional phase. The U.S. has been pressing for an acceptable agreement to open the strait before lifting its blockade on Iranian ports. The strait had been effectively closed by Iran following attacks by Israel and the U.S. on Feb. 28, disrupting the passage of about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil supplies.

**Previous Remarks by Trump Targeting Oman:**
In an interview with Fox News reporter Trey Yingst, Trump stated that the U.S. would consider bombing Oman if it obstructed their plans, using strong language for emphasis. This was not the first instance of Trump issuing threats towards Oman, as he had previously remarked during a cabinet meeting in May that Oman would need to comply or face consequences. Trump dismissed the significance of the 60-day deadline for peace talks expiration, indicating no specific timeline for resolution. He mentioned the existence of a back channel for discussions with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres advocated for the resumption of peace talks between Iran and the U.S., highlighting the futility of a military solution and emphasizing the need to reduce hostile rhetoric.

**Houthi Rebels’ Claims of Attacks:**
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, alleged carrying out an attack on a ship and four military boats in the Red Sea near Mokha, Yemen, close to the Bab el-Mandab Strait. The rebels reportedly launched ballistic missiles at the vessels, resulting in their capsizing and burning. The Houthis claimed the targeted vessels belonged to Saudi Arabia, although no evidence was presented. Additionally, the rebels claimed responsibility for a drone attack on government forces in Marib province.

**Drone Strikes on Iraqi Officials:**
Northern Iraq witnessed drone attacks targeting two officials, as confirmed by the regional counterterrorism service, believed to have originated from the Iran-Iraq border. One of the attacks targeted the office of Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region, while the other struck the residence of a senior regional intelligence official. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, incidents of attacks on U.S. military and diplomatic facilities in Iraq have been common. However, the direct targeting of regional government buildings in this latest incident was deemed unusual. Barzani condemned the attack as a serious escalation posing a direct threat to the region’s security and stability. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi distanced Iran from the attack, cautioning Kurdish allies to be vigilant against potential efforts to sow discord among neighboring nations. U.S. troops currently stationed in the Kurdish region of Iraq have commenced their withdrawal ahead of the agreed-upon deadline of September 30 to conclude the U.S. military presence in Iraq.
