MP Karl Turner, known for his criticism of the Government, has had the Labour whip removed. Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds reportedly notified Mr. Turner in writing about his suspension due to recent conduct issues. The MP had received warnings for making derogatory comments about fellow Labour MPs and displaying intimidating behavior in the Commons chamber.
Despite claiming he was unaware of the whip removal before it was reported, Mr. Turner expressed his surprise on social media. He has been actively opposing the Government’s proposal to eliminate jury trials for certain offenses. However, his criticism has extended to Keir Starmer and Downing Street in recent times.
In a controversial move, Mr. Turner cast doubt on the alleged theft of former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney’s phone, stating he didn’t believe the incident occurred without providing evidence. He later clarified his position, acknowledging the reported theft and dismissing conspiracy theories.
The MP has also criticized Mr. McSweeney in interviews, calling him a “lying b******”. Following Labour’s recent by-election defeat, Mr. Turner blamed the Prime Minister for preventing Andy Burnham from standing as the party’s candidate, which he believed impacted their chances.
Mr. Turner, a former shadow solicitor general, linked his opposition to jury trial reforms to a past incident where he was falsely accused of handling stolen goods. Despite facing suspension, he asserted his commitment to speaking out against what he perceives as unjust measures.
In a statement post-suspension, Mr. Turner emphasized the importance of jury trials in upholding democracy and the justice system. He expressed a desire to reconcile with his party, the Prime Minister, and the Government while continuing to advocate for necessary changes in the justice system.
The decision to strip Mr. Turner of the Labour whip is expected to undergo further review at a later stage.
