Police in a UK city center have provided a significant update following a car incident involving pedestrians over the weekend. Derbyshire Constabulary announced that a man has been charged in connection with the collision.
The incident occurred when a Suzuki Swift struck pedestrians in Friar Gate, Derby, around 9:30 pm on Saturday, injuring seven people, some seriously. All seven victims were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, with four already discharged.
Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, residing in Alvaston, faces multiple charges, including Section 18 GBH with intent, dangerous driving, and possession of a bladed article. Originally from India, Ponnachan, now residing in Derby, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred expressed concern for the injured individuals, their families, and witnesses, emphasizing the impact on the Derby community. Acknowledging the support received in the investigation, she urged anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward.
Janine McKinney of the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the decision to prosecute Ponnachan based on evidence gathered during the police inquiry. Cooperation from the public was requested to ensure a fair judicial process without hindrance.
