Three individuals, including an infant, tragically lost their lives during an Easter egg hunt when a tree fell on them. The victims were a 21-year-old mother, her 10-month-old daughter, and a 16-year-old teenager. Another 18-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Satrupholm, Germany, where approximately 50 people from a nearby residential facility for new mothers, expecting mothers, and children had gathered for the event. A massive 30-meter-tall tree collapsed onto the group around 11 am, leading to the tragic outcome.
Emergency responders worked to free four individuals trapped under the fallen tree. Despite efforts to save them, the mother and teenager succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The infant girl passed away later at the hospital, while the 18-year-old woman remained in critical condition after being airlifted for medical care.
Upon receiving the distressing news, two helicopters and multiple ambulances rushed to the remote forested area in Satrupholm. Witnesses described seeing colorful Easter eggs strewn across the ground where the incident took place.
The facility hosting the event is part of the state-supported child welfare system, offering assistance to pregnant women and new mothers in need. Following the tragedy, grief counselors were dispatched to provide support to those affected.
Images from the scene, shared by the Bild news site, depicted Easter eggs scattered on the forest floor and the victims covered with white sheets. The area had been under a high wind warning by the German weather service, with a severe storm forecasted across northern Germany, anticipating winds up to 60mph.
Authorities from the Schleswig-Holstein region, where the facility is situated, expressed deep sorrow over the accident. In a joint statement, regional Governor Daniel Gunther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Toure conveyed their condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured, acknowledging the profound impact of the tragic incident.
