Fossil eggshells believed to belong to some of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered have been unearthed in a surprisingly cooler climate, quite a distance from the equator. These massive titanosaurs, which couldn’t warm their volleyball-sized eggs by brooding, are speculated to have utilized an alternative incubation method.
A recent study, co-authored by University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky, alongside researchers from Japan and Argentina, delves into how titanosaurs managed to maintain optimal egg temperatures for successful hatching. Through examining the microscopic pores on the eggshells, the team suggests that titanosaurs likely employed a technique akin to modern crocodiles – burying their eggs in warm, decomposing vegetation.
Titanosaurs, colossal herbivorous dinosaurs characterized by long necks and tails, roamed on four legs and weighed up to 75 tonnes, comparable to half the mass of a blue whale. These titanosaur fossils have been linked to volleyball-sized fossil eggs known as Fusioolithus, previously discovered in warmer regions.
In a surprising find, fragments of Fusioolithus eggshells were uncovered in the Chorrillo Formation at the southern tip of Argentina in 2020 and 2024. This rock formation dates back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 72 to 66 million years ago, just before the extinction of dinosaurs. The site’s climate during that era, akin to today’s New York City, was notably distant from the equator, similar to Red Deer, Alta.
The fossils discovered in the Chorrillo Formation unveil a rich coastal ecosystem where titanosaurs such as Nullotitan glaciaris, measuring up to 25 meters in length, coexisted with smaller herbivores like Isasicursor santacrucensis, megaraptors resembling tyrannosaurs, and various other fauna including crocodiles, snakes, turtles, and mammals.
Despite the challenges posed by their size, titanosaurs managed to thrive in diverse environments through innovative incubation strategies. The research sheds light on the adaptability of dinosaurs, showcasing their ability to thrive and reproduce in varying climates and conditions.
Tsu-Ruei Yang, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology at Taiwan’s National Museum of Natural Science, suggests that titanosaurs’ successful global spread may be attributed to their diverse nesting strategies. Further investigation into titanosaur nesting behaviors throughout the Cretaceous period could provide insights into their evolutionary success.
