Norway’s King Harald, known for his reformist approach and distinguished reign spanning over three decades, has passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by the royal palace amid a series of challenges faced by the Norwegian monarchy.
The announcement of King Harald’s peaceful passing at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, was made by the royal palace. The monarch, who held the title of Europe’s oldest reigning king, had been hospitalized earlier on August 17 for treatment of a bacterial blood infection.
In 2024, King Harald faced health issues during a holiday in Malaysia, where he received medical care, including a temporary pacemaker. Transported back to Norway by the armed forces, he later underwent a permanent pacemaker implant.
In the same year, King Harald, who had been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, disclosed his decision to scale back official duties while affirming his commitment to his lifelong role as king, dismissing any notions of abdication.
Prime Minister Mark Carney paid tribute to King Harald, emphasizing the late monarch’s strong ties with Canada. Carney highlighted King Harald’s visits to Toronto and Little Norway during his wartime exile, his state visit to Canada in 2002, and their warm meeting in Oslo in the previous year.
The royal family faces a challenging period following King Harald’s demise. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Crown Prince Haakon, has been under public scrutiny for her association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, for which she has expressed regret. Moreover, her son Marius Hoiby, from a previous relationship, was convicted in June on several charges, including rape and domestic violence, leading to a four-year prison sentence, with appeals from both sides.
Amidst these events, support for the monarchy in Norway experienced fluctuations, dropping to 60% in February 2026 before slightly rising to 64% in May of the same year.
