During the long tenure of the television show Friends, Matthew Perry’s character Chandler Bing was hugely popular among viewers. However, following his passing in 2023, many found it difficult to reconcile the information about his ketamine addiction with the beloved TV persona they were familiar with.
Netflix has now announced a three-part documentary series titled The One About Matthew Perry, promising a more comprehensive look at the life of the actor who hailed from Canada.
The series will delve into Perry’s evolution from an up-and-coming comedic talent to his iconic role on the successful NBC sitcom. According to Netflix, the show will feature never-before-heard accounts from his inner circle, including lifelong friends and his sister Mia Perry Bowick, who is a grief specialist and has openly shared her personal experiences following Perry’s demise.
In a statement, Bowick expressed, “It has taken me some time to be prepared to recount these memories and reflect on what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexities of his life — to see him as a complete individual, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone dealing with addiction.”
Perry tragically passed away at the age of 54 due to a ketamine overdose in his home’s hot tub. Several individuals pleaded guilty to charges related to providing him with the drug, including Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who is currently appealing his 30-month prison sentence for selling ketamine to Perry.
Netflix has assured that the documentary will not only feature recollections from Perry’s admirers but will also provide “revealing new insights into his personal struggles, honoring the legacy of honesty and advocacy he has left behind.” The docuseries is set to premiere on October 27.
