“Mother Faces Racist Backlash in Pursuit of UK Dreams”

Date:

A mother of three from Gaza faced severe racist insults after seeking to relocate her family to the UK to pursue her aspirations, a move criticized by former Home Secretary and Reform MP Suella Braverman.

Alaa Radwan fled Gaza with her family in 2024 following the destruction of their home during Israeli attacks. They sought refuge in Egypt while maintaining contact with loved ones in war-torn Palestine.

Recently, Alaa secured an unconditional offer from Goldsmith’s University to pursue a Master’s degree in Media and Communications. To aid in funding their journey to the UK, she initiated a GoFundMe campaign.

Expressing her excitement, Alaa shared with the Mirror, “This opportunity is a dream come true for me. It marks a fresh start for my family, with plans to pursue a Ph.D. after completing my MA. This is a chance for a family that has faced immense hardships in Gaza.”

However, following her social media appeal on platform X, Suella Braverman reposted Alaa’s plea, suggesting that she should travel alone for her studies, leaving her spouse and children behind.

In response, Braverman stated, “There is no need to relocate your entire family for a Media Studies degree. Universities should prioritize education over immigration.”

Subsequently, Alaa faced a barrage of online racist attacks, leading her to deactivate her X account due to overwhelming hostility.

Alaa voiced her distress, stating, “Suella Braverman spearheaded the attack, advocating for my separation from my young children. Many messages conveyed unwelcome sentiments, questioning my right to bring my family to the UK. Our journey is self-funded, and we intend to sustain ourselves in the UK.”

Despite the adversity, Alaa successfully raised over £40,000, enabling her family to secure a spot at Goldsmith’s University and prepare for their relocation to the UK. The funds raised will primarily cover tuition fees, with additional support needed for visa applications.

Alaa is optimistic about the future, hoping for a fresh start for her family. She emphasized, “This opportunity signifies a new chapter for us, offering hope after enduring immense challenges in Gaza.”

For those willing to support Alaa’s family transition to the UK, donations can be made through her GoFundMe campaign.
