Marissa Grimes, a 26-year-old mother of two, made a final visit to her abusive ex-boyfriend Valerian ‘Will’ O’Steen in February 2022 before leaving to start a new life. Unbeknownst to her, this visit would turn into a tragic nightmare.
Prior to this incident, O’Steen had threatened Marissa’s life and prevented her from leaving his residence. Marissa, showing courage, managed to contact her mother, who alerted the authorities. O’Steen was arrested for domestic violence and ordered to keep his distance from Marissa.
Despite these measures, during their last meeting, a neighbor witnessed O’Steen threatening Marissa with a firearm. This marked the final time Marissa was seen alive. O’Steen’s violence escalated, leading to a horrific act where he brutally murdered Marissa. Subsequently, he concealed her body on the property.
Marissa’s vehicle was found abandoned near O’Steen’s home, prompting a search by the police. During the investigation, a SWAT officer discovered Marissa’s body buried beneath the house, wrapped in a blanket and tarpaulin, bearing severe injuries including lacerations, black eyes, and broken bones.
At O’Steen’s trial, prosecutor Allenna Bangs pointed to him as the sole individual with the motive and opportunity to kill Marissa Grimes. The medical examiner confirmed that Marissa’s death resulted from blunt force trauma to the head. Despite his denial of the accusations, O’Steen was convicted of murder on September 22, 2025, and the death penalty was sought.
Following the sentencing by Judge Ryan Hill, Marissa’s father addressed O’Steen, expressing his pain and emphasizing the loss his actions had caused. O’Steen remained stoic in response to the death sentence.
