“National Steel Car Workers Strike Over Pay and Safety Concerns”

Date:

Workers at National Steel Car in Hamilton, totaling more than 1,200, commenced a strike following the rejection of a contract offer at midnight on Wednesday. The decision came after a high-turnout vote on Tuesday, with 91% of employees participating and 79% voting against the proposed contract, as stated by Frank Crowder, the president of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7135.

The primary demands of the striking workers include higher wages and a voice for the union in overseeing an incentive program deemed “dangerous” by Crowder. According to him, the company’s wage offers have not kept pace with inflation rates, leading to dissatisfaction among the workforce.

Michael Schram, a welder and union steward at the plant, expressed concerns over inadequate wages and pensions, especially for older employees. He highlighted the financial struggles faced by many workers, emphasizing the need for improved compensation and retirement benefits.

At the core of the workers’ grievances is an incentive program at National Steel Car that offers a 25% bonus on wages if production targets are met, but recent changes have made it unattainable for many employees. Crowder pointed out that the union lacks influence over the program, leading to discrepancies in pay and work conditions.

The history of labor disputes at the company includes a 41-day strike in 2023 that resulted in a 13% wage increase. Crowder cited instances where workers lost a significant portion of their expected wages due to issues with the incentive program, raising concerns about worker safety and well-being.

The union is open to resuming negotiations with the company, despite alleging that the latter walked out during previous talks. National Steel Car declined to provide a comment, citing the unavailability of their spokesperson amidst the ongoing strike.
