“Markham Revs Up for Inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy”

Date:

Markham is gearing up for the NTT IndyCar Series event, the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy, taking place this weekend. While IndyCar has a long history in Toronto, this will be the first time the race is held outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.

The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will wind through various locations including the Unionville GO station, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To help attendees reach the track, it is recommended to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or take Highway 407 with parking available west of the event grounds.

Metrolinx is increasing service on the Stouffville Line for easier access to the track. Additional trips between Union Station and Unionville GO are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, along with enhanced York Region Transit services and shuttle services from parking lots to the event grounds in Markham.

Residents of Markham have been coping with the disruptions caused by track construction, with road closures impacting Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard until Monday morning. Some road closures will extend until August 27 for the track dismantling process.

The highlight of the event will be the IndyCar race on Sunday, with the current points leader, Alex Palou, expected to shine. Alongside Palou, drivers such as Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay are anticipated to deliver thrilling performances. Local talents like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also be showcasing their skills in the support series.

Drivers are expressing excitement and challenges about the new track layout in Markham, highlighting the smooth surface and unique elevation changes. Tickets for the event can be purchased for Saturday and Sunday, while Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions are open to the public with a donation to Make-A-Wish Canada encouraged upon entry.
