“Pierre Poilievre Taps Dane Lloyd for Alberta Separation Referendum”

Date:

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has selected Alberta MP Dane Lloyd to take charge as the party’s representative for the upcoming Alberta referendum on separation this autumn. Poilievre revealed this decision on Sunday, sharing a letter addressed to Lloyd outlining his new responsibilities.

Lloyd, who has represented the Parkland riding since 2017 and hails from Alberta, boasts a background as a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces. Poilievre emphasized that Lloyd’s military experience equips him with the necessary strength for his new role.

Poilievre, advocating for Alberta to remain part of Canada, acknowledged the valid concerns and grievances expressed by Albertans. He emphasized the importance of listening to the people rather than admonishing them, highlighting that what benefits Alberta also benefits the entire country.

In response to his appointment, Lloyd expressed his honor in contributing to the significant discussions ahead. He affirmed his strong belief in a united Canada through a social media post.

Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Morgan Breitkreutz as the government’s senior adviser on Alberta to coordinate the federal response to the referendum and oversee major initiatives like the proposed West Coast pipeline.

Separatist advocate Mitch Sylvestre, who spearheaded the petition for a separation referendum, noted that the Conservative Party’s support for the status quo is expected given their interest in retaining Alberta within Canada. Sylvestre highlighted the Conservatives’ vested interest in Alberta, where they hold a significant majority of seats.

Evan Menzies, a former United Conservative Party member now working at Crestview Strategies, commended Lloyd’s appointment, praising him as a principled individual dedicated to serving his community. Menzies emphasized Lloyd’s understanding of the frustrations felt by Albertans and his ability to engage with those seeking attention from the federal government.

However, political analyst Lori Williams cautioned against Poilievre’s focus on criticisms of Ottawa, suggesting it could backfire by fueling support for separatism. Williams warned that emphasizing a message of a broken Canada might sway voters to opt for secession in the referendum.

One of the queries slated for the October referendum will ask Albertans whether they support the province remaining part of Confederation or if they endorse the provincial government initiating the legal proceedings for a binding separation referendum. The other nine questions pertain to immigration and constitutional matters.

The referendum is scheduled for October 19, providing Albertans with the opportunity to voice their opinions on these critical issues.
