Renowned Author Rachel Reid Saves Local Libraries

Date:

Nova Scotia native Rachel Reid, a renowned author, has graciously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library following the distressing news of five local branches facing closure. In an interview with CBC News, Reid emphasized her belief in utilizing success for the greater good within the community.

Last month, the Annapolis Valley Regional Library made a pivotal decision to allocate $80,000 from its reserve funds to sustain the operations of the five at-risk branches until September 30. Despite securing partial funding from municipalities earlier this year, a significant shortfall of over $200,000 remained to ensure the continued operation of the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The library expressed profound gratitude for Rachel Reid’s substantial donation, hailing it as one of the most significant private contributions in its history. Julia Merritt, CEO of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library, recognized the impact of Reid’s generosity in supporting the library’s mission to foster reading, learning, and community connections across the region.

Acknowledging the essential role of libraries in her personal journey, Reid underscored the importance of proper funding for these vital community resources. She reminisced about her formative years spent in a Bedford library, where her passion for literature was nurtured, ultimately shaping her path to becoming a successful author.

While Reid’s donation is a significant boost, the library reiterated the ongoing need for sustainable public funding and strong partnerships at the municipal and provincial levels to ensure the long-term viability of library services. Reid echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about funding challenges faced by public libraries and the critical role they play in communities.

Looking ahead, the library announced plans for a special event to celebrate libraries, reading, and community, in which Rachel Reid will participate. The event aims to highlight the value of libraries and their impact on society, with further details set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
