“Rural Family Faces Emergency Medical Access Crisis”

Date:

A family residing in Biggar faced challenges due to the absence of nearby emergency medical services, resulting in significant expenses. Amy Haynes recounted an incident when her three-year-old son, Nolan, developed a high fever exceeding 40°C this spring, prompting the need for urgent medical attention. Despite being informed at a local clinic that Nolan’s condition could lead to a seizure and necessitated emergency care, the family encountered difficulties securing prompt medical assistance. Upon requesting an ambulance, they were informed that all hospitals in Saskatoon, North Battleford, and Swift Current had no available beds. Frustrated by the lack of immediate healthcare access, Haynes expressed disappointment at the situation, which ultimately led to a costly two-and-a-half-hour ambulance journey to Prince Albert, amounting to $1,300.

Receiving the substantial bill for the ambulance service was disheartening for Haynes, although she had anticipated the financial burden given the circumstances. Nolan was diagnosed with a form of pneumonia and received treatment in Prince Albert before being discharged. The story of the family’s ordeal was highlighted by the provincial Opposition NDP during a news conference in Biggar, underscoring the potential risks faced by rural residents in accessing timely emergency medical services. NDP MLA Keith Jorgenson emphasized the critical importance of proximity to healthcare facilities in emergencies, as even minor distances could impact the outcome of life-threatening situations.

The NDP’s presentation of the family’s experience raises concerns about the strain on patients and their families due to hospital capacity constraints. In response to the situation, the provincial government outlined plans to enhance hospital capacity in Saskatoon by introducing 146 additional beds. It clarified that ambulance services are not covered under the Canada Health Act, and there is no insurance provision for inter-hospital ambulance transfers, shedding light on the financial implications faced by families in such circumstances.
