“Saskatoon Officer Rescues Teen Trapped in Storm Drain”

Date:

A Saskatoon police officer is being praised for his exceptional courage in rescuing a teenage boy trapped by fast-flowing rainwater in a storm drain last week. The situation, deemed potentially life-threatening by Sean Thody, the deputy fire chief on the scene, was intense for both the teen and the responders.

The incident unfolded at a dog park near the 3700 block of Kinnear Avenue around 8 p.m. CST on Aug. 14, as per police reports. The young man was found inside the storm drain, pressed against the grate bars by the force of the water. Thody described the physical impossibility of resisting such high water flow.

The first officer on-site entered the drain and ensured the boy’s head remained above water until the fire department arrived to coordinate the rescue operation. The process, described as “organized chaos” by Thody, involved using spreaders and saws to widen the bars for the teen to pass through. The rescue lasted close to two hours before the teen was safely transported to the hospital.

The officer’s bravery in tackling the potentially fatal situation was commended by the police on social media, although the officer’s name was not disclosed. The City of Saskatoon’s water and waste operations department clarified that the ordeal began when four teenage boys accessed the stormwater system through an outfall. As the storm sewers filled up due to rain, three boys managed to escape, while one was trapped against a grate.

Before emergency help arrived, the three boys assisted in shielding their friend from the water, allowing him to breathe. They were later relocated while the rescue operation was ongoing. City officials are cautioning residents against exploring city infrastructure like sewers, bridges, or electrical substations, emphasizing that only authorized personnel should access such areas due to their extreme danger. Regular inspections are conducted on outfalls, and residents are encouraged to report any unsafe or compromised infrastructure to the authorities.
