Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe made history by breaking the marathon world record at the prestigious London Marathon, finishing in an astonishing time of 1:59:30. Sawe surpassed the previous record of 2:00:35 set by Kelvin Kiptum, securing his victory for the second consecutive year.
This achievement marked a significant improvement from Sawe’s previous year’s time of 2:02:27. The intense competition in the elite men’s race culminated in a close race between Sawe and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha.
In a thrilling finish, Sawe managed to outpace Kejelcha in the final stretch, solidifying his place in the annals of marathon history. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, highlighting the neck-and-neck battle between the two athletes.

The wheelchair races saw Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claim his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s competition, matching the overall record set by David Weir with his eighth win at the event. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, successfully defended her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
