“TIFF: The Market Shifts Focus to Deal-making”

Date:

The Toronto International Festival has built a reputation as a trendsetter over the years, with top movie stars traditionally launching their Oscar campaigns there. However, as popular films and high-profile celebrities increasingly opt for other festivals for premieres, TIFF is undergoing a transformation to focus more on the business aspects of film acquisition and packaging.

In response to industry changes, TIFF is repositioning itself to emphasize dealmaking and strategic sessions, aligning with the direction of many major festivals. Supported by a substantial $23 million injection from Ottawa, TIFF: The Market now showcases 70 sessions exploring various facets of film, television, and interactive content. Projects like a sci-fi film featuring Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra, a romantic comedy starring Colin Firth and Halle Berry, and a new installment of the Air Bud franchise are among the offerings attracting attention.

Despite its efforts to adapt, TIFF faces stiff competition from established players like the Cannes marketplace, which sets the industry’s pace. For instance, Jordan Firstman’s film “Club Kid” gained momentum at Cannes before creating a buzz for its Canadian premiere at TIFF. Alongside Cannes, TIFF also competes with the American Film Market in Los Angeles, highlighting emerging markets in Africa and Asia to distinguish itself.

As TIFF evolves to cater more to industry professionals, questions arise about its impact on the festival’s core audience: film enthusiasts. Ticket prices have been on the rise, posing challenges for fans who contribute to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. While TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey acknowledges the allure of star-studded premieres, he also points out that ticket costs remain comparatively lower than sporting events in the city.

Though the number of high-profile attendees may be declining, TIFF continues to showcase a range of buzzworthy films for the upcoming fall season. Director Danny Boyle’s “Ink” and Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut” are among the anticipated titles, along with TV series like Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” and the Crave series “Yaga.”

With a focus on Canadian cinema, TIFF celebrates local talent with films such as “The Stunt Driver” by Michael Dowse and the documentary “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple.” Additionally, offbeat offerings like “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” and “Smudge the Blades” add diversity to the festival’s lineup, showcasing unique perspectives and storytelling.

In the midst of industry shifts and evolving preferences, TIFF remains a prominent player in the film festival landscape, adapting to meet the changing needs of the entertainment industry while continuing to celebrate cinematic excellence and innovation.
