Donald Trump is on track to have a significant international airport renamed in his honor as the president known for his self-aggrandizement continues to attach his name to various structures.
Already having emblazoned his name on government buildings, cultural centers, money, and warships, Trump now seeks to make his mark in aviation. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a close ally of Trump, recently signed a bill allowing for the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The airport is conveniently located just 4 miles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, with the road leading from the airport to his mansion already named Donald J. Trump Boulevard.
The Trump Organization, the president’s family business, submitted a trademark application for the airport name earlier this year. Concerns have been raised by Florida Democrats regarding potential financial gains the family might accrue from the name change.
A spokesperson for the Trump Organization has stated that the family will not receive any royalties or financial benefits from the renaming. If the proposed plans are approved, the airport could officially bear its new name on July 1, necessitating the update of government records and maps.
Additionally, the airport code could be altered from PBI to Trump’s initials, DJT. The bill proposing the name change was introduced by Florida Representative Meg Weinberger, who expressed pride in her role in making the renaming possible, emphasizing the airport as a place where greatness begins.
While there are already eight U.S. airports named after former presidents, these names were bestowed post-presidency and not during their time in office. Some examples include John F. Kennedy International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
In a separate development, Trump unveiled plans for a Miami skyscraper intended to house his presidential library. A video shared on social media showcased digital renderings of the building featuring Trump’s signature branding, a presidential jet, a gold escalator, a ballroom, replica Oval Office, rooftop gardens, and a gold statue of Trump himself.
Miami Dade College had previously donated nearly three acres of downtown real estate for the library project.
