Brits are facing more challenging weather conditions as the most recent weather map indicates an approaching wintry chill just before the upcoming Easter weekend. Forecasts nationwide vary from overcast and rainy to sunny but cold, reflecting the typical fluctuations of spring temperatures. Morning temperatures have mostly hovered in the mid-to-high single digits before rising to the teens in the afternoon, within seasonal norms.
However, the latest maps suggest a significant drop in temperatures in the coming days, with the mercury potentially plummeting to as low as -6C, leading to unexpected snowfall during traditionally warmer hours of the day. According to WXCharts, a cold front is set to move in from the northwest, causing temperatures to decrease by almost 20 degrees Celsius overall.
Although the UK may see highs of 14C today, tomorrow could bring temperatures dipping into negative values. The charts illustrate a cold front gripping the Scottish coastline starting from 6am on April 1, gradually lowering temperatures to -2C in the Highlands by evening. By midnight on April 2, temperatures could further decrease to -4C on the western coast and as low as -6C in the east, enveloping the entire country in cold by noon.
As the severe cold descends on Scotland, snow is also expected to accompany it, particularly in the Scottish Highlands, with forecasts indicating less than an inch of snow accumulation lasting until around 6pm on the same day. Looking ahead to the period of April 4 to 13, the long-range weather outlook suggests continued unpredictability for the remainder of the Easter break.
The forecast mentions the possibility of intermittent warmer periods, likely concentrated in the traditionally hotter regions of the country. The agency warns of unsettled conditions over the Easter Holiday weekend, with potential strong winds and heavy rainfall, especially in the western and northern parts of the UK. Post-Easter, a division between northwest and southeast regions is anticipated, with northern and western areas experiencing more unsettled weather compared to the drier and clearer intervals expected in the southeast. Overall temperatures are expected to remain near average, with occasional warmer spells likely in the south.
