The era of traditional copper landlines suspended above UK streets is drawing to a close, as the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services is scheduled for January 2027. This transition signals the end of the outdated copper-wire phone network, with households transitioning to making calls through their broadband connections.
This change represents a significant milestone in UK communications, with BT’s Openreach network actively implementing its “Stop Sell” initiative to hasten the move away from aging infrastructure. Under this initiative, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are no longer permitted to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas.
The rollout of Stop Sell notifications has been ongoing across various parts of the UK, and Openreach has announced a further expansion impacting 238 exchange locations and approximately 1.69 million premises. Following these adjustments, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or acquire new services will be required to transition to full fibre broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the legacy copper network.
Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell program is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Consequently, customers looking to make changes to their broadband or phone services will need to opt for a new digital service over the Full Fibre network.
The enforcement of Stop Sell regulations will be extended to 1,432 exchanges nationwide by early June, affecting about 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in propelling the UK toward a modern full fibre future by shifting individuals to newer, more advanced technologies.
By phasing out legacy copper-based services in areas where fibre connectivity is prevalent, the initiative facilitates a smoother transition for customers and providers to faster and more dependable digital infrastructure. This approach also streamlines the maintenance process by reducing the complexity and expenses associated with managing both old and new networks before the imminent shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in less than eight months.
Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages digital calling technology to connect homes via broadband, offering modern features such as Multi Call, three-way calling for conference calls, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile phones. The call quality is expected to be significantly enhanced with Digital Voice, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not alter how they utilize their phone services. The cost of the new Digital Voice and broadband service is encompassed within a single package price, with no additional fees for Digital Voice services.
