Michael van Gerwen criticized Michael Unterbuchner as ‘below par’ following a convincing 6-2 victory at the European Darts Grand Prix on Saturday. Van Gerwen smoothly advanced to the round-of-16 after easily dispatching Unterbuchner, who had jokingly mentioned facing Van Gerwen the day before.
Unterbuchner, who had surprised William O’Connor in the opening round, humorously remarked, “Michael van Gerwen? Who’s that? No, no, just kidding. I’m looking forward to it.”
The three-time world champion did not take Unterbuchner’s comments lightly, stating after defeating him, “He didn’t make a joke. He is one of those individuals who attempt to be humorous. He has never triumphed over me and never will. He lacks the skill – even my lesser performances are enough to defeat him, but it’s inconsequential. Onward to tomorrow.”
Van Gerwen demonstrated his prowess on the dartboard during the match, showcasing an average of 91 and executing an impressive 102 checkout. His next opponent in the last-16 will be fellow Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena, who overcame Kevin Doets in an all-Dutch clash. Van Gerwen commented, “I had some strong legs, although one leg with a double one was disastrous. Nevertheless, I secured the leg, which is what matters most. The audience is enjoying themselves – that is the primary concern. It has been a while since I last triumphed here, so hopefully, I can make a strong effort tomorrow.”
Van Gerwen last won the European Tour event in 2018, noting, “I have a solid track record. I have known Jermaine for a long time, since our days as youth players. Frankly, I have always had the upper hand, but he is a skilled player. His current form showcases his talent. Thus, I must ensure I perform well tomorrow.”
In another upset at the tournament, Niko Springer defeated defending champion Gary Anderson with a remarkable 6-3 victory.
