“Voice of Calgary Flames, Peter Maher, Passes Away at 79”

Date:

Longtime voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher’s death was confirmed on Thursday. He served as the team’s play-by-play announcer for radio broadcasts starting from 1980, covering 33 consecutive Calgary Flames seasons. Known for his enthusiasm and signature catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher was a prominent figure in Calgary, especially during the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their finals appearance in 2004.

Retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season, Maher left a lasting impact on Flames fans. The team expressed condolences to Maher’s loved ones and supporters, recognizing his voice as an integral part of the Flames fan experience. Maher, originally from Campbellton, N.B., also worked as a broadcaster for the Toronto Maple Leafs before moving to Calgary to become the official voice of the Flames in 1980.

Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher for years, remembered Maher as a dedicated storyteller of Flames history. Kerr emphasized Maher’s commitment to providing authentic and journalistic-based commentary, highlighting Maher’s professionalism and talent as a broadcaster. Maher’s illustrious career included calling six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he narrated Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.”

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Maher received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions to NHL broadcasting. Following his retirement, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named in his honor. Additionally, Maher’s legacy lives on through an annual award in Calgary bestowed upon the Flames player who embodies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, reflecting Maher’s own virtues.
