“13-Year-Old Breaks Tuna Fishing Record in Nova Scotia”

Date:

A 13-year-old girl set a new world record for tuna fishing off the coast of Nova Scotia during the 22nd annual Wedgeport Tuna Tournament and Festival. Délynn Jacquard caught a 711-pound tuna aboard the Pelagic Predator, potentially securing an International Game Fish Association female junior world record. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 618 pounds set by Jenna Gavin 12 years ago.

Jacquard described the challenging experience of reeling in the massive fish, which took over an hour to accomplish. Her father, Camille Jacquard, who captains the Pelagic Predator, has been participating in the tournament for about 20 years. Despite her success, Délynn remains uncertain about returning for next year’s competition.

Brandon Doucette, a tournament board member, anticipates that it may take up to six months for the record to be officially recognized. He explained the difference in weighing methods between IGFA standards and the tournament, where Jacquard’s tuna weighed 711 pounds in the water and 635 pounds after partial gutting.

Doucette highlighted the remarkable fishing achievements of 2026, noting another record-breaking catch of an 801-pound bluefin tuna by Capt. Brent Pothier aboard the Lucas & Noah. This catch exceeded the previous tournament record of 796 pounds, underscoring a year of exceptional achievements. The tournament holds historical significance for Wedgeport, known for hosting international anglers in past decades.

The event not only celebrates fishing records but also honors the community’s cultural history. Doucette emphasized that all fish caught during the tournament fall within the region’s commercial quota, ensuring that they serve as a valuable food source for local consumption.
