The movie “Obsession” has captivated audiences worldwide, achieving a significant milestone at the global box office. According to recent reports, the horror film has crossed the $500 million mark, making it the first original movie of the 2020s to reach this achievement.
Surpassing Pixar’s “Elemental,” which grossed $494.6 million globally in 2023, “Obsession” now holds the title of the highest-grossing original film of the post-pandemic era. Remarkably, this micro-budget film, produced with only $750,000, has become the top-grossing movie ever made for less than $1 million.
Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, “Obsession” premiered on May 15 and has seen its weekly grosses increase consistently, a feat not seen since “E.T.” The film’s success continued during its U.S. theatrical run, grossing $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million overseas, totaling over $501.5 million worldwide.
Despite its impressive achievements, “Obsession” is yet to be released in South Korea. The film’s commercial success has not only set records but has also opened doors for its young cast members. Lead actors, Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston, are already landing roles in major projects, with Navarette set to star in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” and Johnston in talks to join Universal’s new “The Mummy” movie.
The overwhelming success of “Obsession” has paved the way for Barker’s next project, a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” in which he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
