“Canary Islands Brace for Saharan Dust Cloud”

Date:

A massive cloud of dust is anticipated to sweep through a popular vacation destination, prompting residents and visitors to shut their windows to prevent the skies from turning orange.

Due to strong winds, Saharan dust is forecasted to head towards the Canary Islands shortly after the discovery of a deceased man by tourists in Tenerife following unprecedented rainfall triggered by Storm Therese.

The government has issued fresh alerts ahead of the expected haze arrival around noon today. Yellow weather warnings are currently in effect across the Canary Islands, cautioning against strong winds, suspended Saharan dust, and challenging coastal conditions.

Specifically, the dust advisory covers islands such as Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, which are popular among British tourists. Coastal and wind advisories remain in place across various islands, urging vigilance in exposed areas.

In 2024, nearly 6.3 million British tourists visited the Canary Islands, making the UK the primary source of visitors to the region.

Experts anticipate that mid-altitude regions and the peaks of the islands will bear the brunt of the dust, potentially affecting air quality and visibility. Concerns are raised about health risks, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, as airborne dust particles could lead to respiratory issues.

Individuals with chronic respiratory ailments are advised to wear masks outdoors, while all residents are instructed to keep windows closed and avoid outdoor activities. Motorists are reminded to exercise caution on the roads due to reduced visibility caused by the dust sweeping across the region.

These warnings follow the recent impacts of Storm Theresa, which brought heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in several areas. Island president Rosa Dávila emphasized the importance of public safety in response to the changing weather conditions.

Tragically, a man was discovered deceased near Benijo last week by tourists after being exposed to harsh weather conditions overnight.
