UK Teacher’s Tragic Fall in Thailand Results in Heartbreak

Date:

A mother from the UK left heartfelt messages on a whiteboard before falling from the balcony of her third-floor apartment in Thailand, according to an inquest.

Amy Spooner, a 31-year-old teacher and mother of a six-year-old boy, sustained severe injuries in the tragic incident that occurred in May 2023. Following the fall, she was hospitalized in Bangkok for several weeks before slipping into a coma, leading to a difficult decision for her family regarding life support.

During the inquest at South London Coroners’ Court, it was revealed that Mrs. Spooner had moved overseas in 2016, living in China, Malaysia, and Thailand before returning to London in 2017 to marry her husband, Symeon Spooner, a 36-year-old maths teacher.

Mrs. Spooner’s mother, Sue McDonald, recounted receiving a concerning call from her daughter in Thailand on May 22, 2023. Subsequently, Mr. Spooner expressed that his wife was acting unlike herself. Mrs. McDonald traveled to Thailand and was informed on May 29 that her daughter had fallen from her high-rise residence.

After being initially treated for her injuries at a local hospital, Mrs. Spooner was transferred to a specialized facility at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok. Despite showing signs of improvement and undergoing surgeries, she eventually fell into a coma from which she did not wake up.

Tragically, a week later, medical professionals declared Mrs. Spooner brain dead, prompting her family to make the heart-wrenching decision to discontinue life support. She passed away on June 29, 2023. The coroner noted a lack of detailed information from Thai authorities regarding the circumstances of her death.

Following a post mortem examination in Thailand, Mrs. Spooner’s body was repatriated to the UK for a second examination at King’s College Hospital, revealing multiple injuries consistent with a fall as the cause of death. Despite efforts, the exact reason for her fall remained unknown to her family.

A fundraising initiative raised over £11,000 to assist in repatriating Mrs. Spooner’s remains to the UK. The organizer, Sonny Nwachukwu, expressed gratitude for the support in honoring Amy’s memory.

The coroner concluded the investigation with a verdict of accidental death in the tragic case of Mrs. Spooner’s passing.
