Women have long faced dismissive treatment when seeking help for severe menstrual pain and heavy bleeding from their doctors. Many of these women actually suffer from conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which often go undiagnosed.
A recent survey I conducted revealed heartbreaking stories from women about the lack of awareness, repeated misdiagnoses, and a concerning lack of urgency in addressing women’s health concerns. Endometriosis affects one in ten women, yet the average wait time for a diagnosis is now nine years and four months, with Black and other ethnic minority women waiting even longer due to dismissive attitudes towards their pain.
The disparity in treatment is evident when comparing the support women receive for such conditions to what men would likely receive if facing similar issues. Despite some progress, there is still a long way to go in prioritizing women’s health and addressing the stigma surrounding gynaecological conditions.
Raising awareness is crucial, and public figures like Emma Barnett and impactful initiatives like the BAFTA-winning short film “This Is Endometriosis” are helping shed light on these issues. Efforts are being made to improve diagnosis times and ensure that women are taken seriously when seeking medical help.
As International Women’s Day coincides with Endometriosis Action Month, it is a pivotal time to challenge societal taboos and encourage open conversations about women’s health. A new Women’s Health Strategy is on the horizon, aiming to reduce diagnosis times and enhance healthcare professionals’ ability to identify conditions like endometriosis early on.
Women should not be dismissed or told to endure their pain silently. A focus on swift diagnosis, effective pain management, and understanding from all facets of society is essential in addressing the injustices women have historically faced in healthcare. Prioritizing women’s health is not just a medical issue but a matter of social justice that aligns with the core values of progress and equality.
