Following the UK’s decision to intercept and detain Russian shadow fleet vessels, Vladimir Putin’s chief propagandist has issued threats to sink Royal Navy warships. The Russian state TV, known for echoing Kremlin directives, labeled the UK’s actions as “piracy” and cautioned about potential missile strikes.
Responding to the UK announcement permitting special forces to intercept Russian vessels involved in illicit activities like smuggling sanctioned oil through the English Channel, Putin’s spokesperson, Vladimir Solovyov, warned of retaliatory measures. He stated that Russia would not hesitate to use aircraft and missiles to counter what they view as acts of piracy by British ships.
Solovyov, recognized by Putin for his contributions to the propaganda efforts, emphasized Russia’s stance on combating piracy and vowed to take action against British naval vessels engaged in such activities. Mocking the Royal Navy’s reduced presence in global waters, he questioned the UK’s capability after potential ship sinkings.
In response to the escalating tensions, some ships have altered their routes to circumvent the English Channel, opting for paths through Irish-controlled waters. Simultaneously, Ukraine’s offensive strikes on Russia, including drone attacks on strategic locations like the Azov Sea port Taganrog, have further intensified the situation.
Recent drone strikes have caused damage in various Russian regions, leading to casualties and destruction of key facilities. Notably, the oil port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region has been engulfed in flames for several days, impacting Russia’s oil export capabilities and financial resources for military operations.
