A recent online scam aiming at WhatsApp users poses a threat to their privacy and sensitive information. With the increasing number of scams targeting individuals, it has become crucial to prioritize online safety by avoiding suspicious links and refraining from downloading unknown software.
In the digital landscape, scammers are becoming more sophisticated, making it challenging to identify fraudulent messages or emails without prior awareness. One such scam, known as the “ghost pairing scam,” is affecting WhatsApp users, prompting a call for increased vigilance regarding incoming messages on the platform.
The scam came to light through a social media post by Caroline, who warned users about the deceptive nature of the scam in a video shared on TikTok. She emphasized the dangers of falling for this scam, as it could potentially grant hackers remote access to valuable data.
The modus operandi of the scam involves sending a seemingly legitimate message, purportedly from WhatsApp, requesting actions to secure the user’s account. By tricking users into forwarding a code, scammers exploit WhatsApp’s account linking feature, enabling them to connect the victim’s account to their device.
If successful, the scam grants unauthorized access to the victim’s WhatsApp account, allowing the perpetrator to read messages, view photos, and send messages on behalf of the user, potentially perpetuating the scam further.
Interestingly, the scam does not immediately disrupt the user’s access to their WhatsApp account, leading them to believe that everything is normal. To safeguard against such threats, users are advised never to share WhatsApp codes with anyone.
WhatsApp does not request codes via text messages, and if someone in your contacts asks for a code, advise them to resend it to their number and refrain from sharing any received codes. Additionally, users can verify linked devices in their settings to ensure the security of their account by removing any unrecognized devices promptly.

Individuals shared their experiences and pledged to disseminate the information, particularly among older family members who may be more susceptible to falling victim to such scams.
