More than 30 individuals are reportedly trapped under debris following the collapse of a four-story school building. The incident occurred at the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School in the capital city of Ghana after heavy rainfall. The structure, constructed 14 years ago, was being used by Christian worshippers at the time of the collapse.
Official figures on the number of trapped or injured individuals have not been confirmed yet. Reports from local sources vary, with United Television Ghana stating over 30 trapped individuals and GhanaPage reporting more than 40. Eight people have been rescued so far, according to 3News.
Following the collapse, local residents and bystanders mobilized to assist in rescuing victims and worshippers using basic tools before professional emergency services arrived. The Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation, and the Ghana National Fire Service are currently conducting rescue operations at the site.
Accra experienced severe flooding overnight, affecting various neighborhoods such as Nima, Kaneshie, Dansoman, Kasoa, and Mallam Junction. Despite a prior 24-hour warning issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the floods led to power outages in the Greater Accra region.
This incident follows a tragic military helicopter crash in southern Ghana last August, claiming the lives of all eight occupants, including high-ranking government officials. The helicopter departed from Accra en route to the Obuasi gold-mining area in the Ashanti region before disappearing from radar and crashing in the Adansi area.
