Britain is set to deploy additional troops equipped with air defense systems to the Middle East to assist in intercepting Iranian missiles. UK Defense Secretary John Healey has announced the deployment of extra troops to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, with the UK’s Typhoon jet patrols expanding to Qatar.
During his visit to the region, Mr. Healey emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting its Gulf partners in defending their airspace. Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated that the UK’s involvement is defensive, stating that the conflict is not one the UK seeks to engage in but will continue to safeguard its interests in the area.
The UK government has revealed plans to send additional air defense teams and systems to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. This includes providing the Sky Sabre air defense missile system to Saudi Arabia and deploying the Lightweight Multirole Missile launcher to Bahrain, along with the Rapid Sentry ground-based air defense missile system in Kuwait.
Mr. Healey stressed the importance of protecting British allies and interests in the face of Iran’s aggressive actions in the region. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to stand by its Middle Eastern partners and work towards a prompt resolution to the conflict. Meanwhile, Starmer reiterated that the UK will not be dragged into the war.
The US has been granted access to British bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites, following the UK’s denial of initial requests for US-Israeli strikes. President Trump has criticized NATO allies, including the UK, for their roles in the conflict and suggested that non-participating countries should secure their own oil supplies from the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in the region have escalated, with Iran targeting neighboring Gulf States, leading to retaliatory actions. The conflict has drawn in various nations, with Israeli forces engaging in combat in southern Lebanon against Hezbollah.
