“Octopus Energy Launches ‘Zero Bills’ Homes Project”

Date:

Octopus Energy is introducing a project involving 300 homes labeled as “zero bills” residences, where occupants are assured of not having to cover gas and electricity expenses for a minimum of ten years. The energy provider has collaborated with Prosperity Group to construct this development in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, with completion expected by 2028 and tenants anticipated to move in by the end of that year.

The pricing details for these properties, which include features like heat pumps, battery storage, and solar panels, have not yet been revealed. This initiative comes amidst an impending increase in the energy price cap due to elevated oil costs following the conflict in Iran. Currently set at £1,641 annually for a typical household, the price cap is poised to rise in the summer.

Octopus Energy has already approved more than 6,000 “zero bills” homes in collaboration with prominent developers, offering a range of housing options including private rentals, privately owned, and shared ownership properties. Their goal is to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, with the program already operational in various countries including Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK.

Recent data from Octopus indicates a surge in sales of heat pumps by 103%, solar panels by 78%, and inquiries about electric vehicle chargers by 42%, as consumers seek to enhance their energy self-reliance. Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, emphasized the importance of innovative solutions in the face of energy challenges, stating that living without an energy bill is now achievable through their Zero Bills tariff.

Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, highlighted the focus on delivering progressive developments with Octopus Energy, integrating advanced technology to enhance living experiences and long-term investment performance. The collaboration aims to meet evolving regulatory standards while addressing the rising demand for sustainable and energy-efficient homes.

In parallel, a recent study by Uswitch reveals that energy suppliers hold £3 billion in customer credit, prompting households to check if they are entitled to reclaim some of these funds. The total amount in credit has increased by £179 million compared to the previous year, with the average household having nearly £200 in credit.
