A charming village in the Cotswolds has captured global attention for its enchanting allure and renowned cottages.
The Cotswolds, known for its golden-hued buildings, rolling hills, and picturesque villages, boasts some of the most stunning landscapes in the country. Several of its towns have received prestigious accolades for their quintessentially English appeal.
Among these is Bibury, a village nestled in Gloucestershire at the heart of the Cotswolds. Characterized by ancient honey-colored stone structures, the meandering River Coln, and the Rack Isle water meadow, Bibury is conveniently located near Cirencester, known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’.
Bibury has gained international acclaim, being named the most beautiful village in the world by Forbes last September and previously recognized as one of the world’s most picturesque villages. Renowned English designer and poet William Morris famously described Bibury as ‘the most beautiful village in England’.
Although relatively small, Bibury attracts thousands of visitors annually, notably for Arlington Row, a row of historic cottages dating back to the 14th century. While now private residences, Arlington Row remains Bibury’s top attraction and one of the most photographed spots in the Cotswolds. Signs requesting ‘No photos please’ can be seen on some houses due to the high tourist influx.
Despite the crowds, Bibury’s charm remains unrivaled, with the scenic River Coln, lush green spaces, streams, and charming establishments adding to its allure. Across from Arlington Row stands Eleven Bibury, a trendy café, gallery shop, and terraced garden.
Another popular spot in the village is Bibury Trout Farm, offering fishing, crazy golf, and refreshments at the café, along with treats from Kelly’s Ice Cream. The Twig café nearby serves as a perfect stop for coffee and cake before exploring the surrounding paths and walking routes.
For accommodations, visitors can choose from holiday rentals like Sackville House, The Bothy, and Sundial Cottage, or opt for the four-star The Swan Hotel. While Bibury may not offer extensive activities, its idyllic setting, peaceful river walks, and serene green spaces against the backdrop of charming stone cottages make it a must-visit destination.
