Balancing screen time with family time is a constant challenge for many families. In today’s digital age, children use electronic devices not only for educational purposes and staying connected with loved ones but also for entertainment, making it difficult to determine a suitable amount of screen time.
To address this issue, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, aims to promote open discussions within families about online safety. Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher engages with parents and children to delve into their challenges, coping mechanisms, and the assistance provided by Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools.
One valuable resource offered is a downloadable family pledge that encourages families to establish guidelines for healthy screen time practices and online safety measures. Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regularly reassessing and adapting rules, such as not letting phone usage become the main activity, particularly for younger children.
For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a vital role in communication, schoolwork, and managing daily routines. Seeking a positive approach to discussing screen time, they participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge. Divided into teams, they completed various tasks focusing on both screen and offline activities, culminating in the completion of Tesco Mobile’s family pledge.
Moving forward, the Karleys plan to utilize Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for expert guidance on maintaining a healthy balance between digital engagement and real-world interactions. Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm, they aim to prioritize family bonding activities like quizzes. By displaying the family pledge prominently and committing to it collectively, they seek to establish new rules and foster a closer family connection.
Lastly, families are advised to be cautious of sensationalized headlines, suspicious websites, and unverified stories online. Teaching children to verify social media accounts and engaging in fact-checking activities together can help promote online safety and critical thinking skills.
