Throughout the week, Garcia displayed a disheartened demeanor despite making the cut, failing to significantly impact the leaderboard. On the final day, his frustration escalated when a wayward shot at the second hole led him to slam his driver into the ground twice, causing damage to the turf. Subsequently, he wrapped his driver around a water cooler, resulting in the shaft breaking, leaving him without a driver for the remainder of the round. By the 10th hole, Garcia was two over par for the day and seven over for the tournament.
Viewers expressed disappointment over Garcia’s behavior, prompting officials, including Geoff Yang, to address the issue. The 46-year-old, a previous Masters champion, received an official code of conduct warning.
Garcia’s lack of confidence coming into Augusta was evident after a slow start to the golf season. Despite an encouraging even-par opening round, he struggled to climb the leaderboard in the subsequent rounds. Notably, Garcia’s incident was not the only one this week, as another player, Bob MacIntyre, also faced disciplinary action for a code of conduct violation after displaying unsportsmanlike conduct on the course.
MacIntyre, who faced a challenging opening round, notably gestured in frustration towards the green during his play. Additionally, he further exacerbated the situation by sharing an image online that was considered inappropriate. It was later revealed that MacIntyre was contending with a neck injury that nearly forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
