A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for homes seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees. Launched recently, this device offers features similar to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record shows, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.
Unlike Sky Q, which requires a monthly subscription, the Manhattan S4-R grants access to over 100 channels without any ongoing payments after the initial purchase. This device operates on Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to the television, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.
The Manhattan S4-R boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search capabilities, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat’s advantage is its cost-free viewing experience. The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently available at retailers such as Argos and Amazon for £219.99, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to release soon. The device is in high demand, with Argos indicating strong sales.
According to Manhattan’s COO Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R aims to provide the subscription-free experience of the T4-R Freeview recorder to Freesat users. The improved recording capabilities allow for up to four simultaneous recordings, enhancing flexibility and choice for households seeking an affordable TV service.
In a similar move challenging traditional TV providers, the Pleio puck has been introduced to offer streaming access without the need for an aerial. Delivering over 50 live channels via the internet, the Pleio puck, priced at £99.99 and now back in stock, includes a gaming controller and access to 200 online games.
Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction on the Sky Glass Air TV ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model can opt for a monthly plan starting from £11, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and a built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar.
