A tragic incident in northern Vietnam claimed the life of a British teenager recently. Orla Wates, a 19-year-old from London, was on the Ha Giang Loop during her gap year when she was involved in a fatal motorbike accident with an oncoming vehicle. Despite being rushed to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi, she succumbed to her injuries on April 2.
Described as beautiful, independent, and witty by her mother, Henrietta Wates, Orla was known for her vibrant personality and zest for life. Her parents, Andrew and Henrietta, decided to donate her organs to help critically ill patients at the hospital as a way of honoring her memory. The family expressed gratitude to the medical staff at the hospital for their care and support during this difficult time.
Mr. Wates, a prominent figure in the Wates building firm, emphasized the family’s desire to give back to Vietnam, a country that held a special place in Orla’s heart. Through a heartfelt post on Viet Duc Friendship Hospital’s Facebook page, he underscored the importance of supporting Vietnam in the aftermath of their daughter’s untimely passing.
Vietnam’s health minister, Dao Hong Lan, acknowledged the family’s compassionate decision and extended her condolences and appreciation for their altruistic gesture. The hospital also praised the family’s act of kindness, noting that Orla’s organ donation has brought hope and a new lease on life to patients in need of organ transplants in Vietnam.
The selfless act of organ donation by Orla’s family transcends borders and serves as a beacon of generosity and compassion in the face of tragedy.
