Universal Credit Beneficiaries to Receive Early Payments Ahead of May Bank Holidays

Date:

Some benefit payments, such as Universal Credit, will be issued earlier next week due to the upcoming May bank holiday on Monday, May 4. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not process payments on bank holidays, so beneficiaries can expect to receive their funds on the preceding working day, which in this case would be Friday, May 1.

The same arrangement applies for the second bank holiday on Monday, May 25, with payments scheduled for Friday, May 22 for those due on that date. While receiving payments early may extend the time until the next payment, the amount remains unchanged unless there have been alterations in personal circumstances.

The adjustment also affects certain HMRC benefits like Child Benefit. Payment frequencies vary depending on the benefit type; for instance, Universal Credit is paid on a fixed monthly schedule, while Child Benefit typically arrives every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

It is important to note that Universal Credit has replaced various other benefits, including Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit. Beneficiaries are advised to check their bank accounts first if they suspect a missed payment before contacting the relevant helpline, which may not be available on bank holidays.
