“U.S. Warns Canada on Retaliation in Tariff Talks”

Date:

U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer stated that the Trump administration will not tolerate any retaliatory actions from Canada in response to the recent tariff threat. Greer emphasized that the intent behind these measures is to safeguard domestic supply chains on a global scale, not just targeting Canada. In the midst of escalating trade talks between the two nations, Greer described the discussions with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as productive.

Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada views the looming August 19 deadline as a critical juncture, indicating a reluctance to continue talks if tariffs are imposed. Greer reiterated the administration’s focus on executing President Trump’s trade policy while expressing openness to aligning Canada’s interests with American objectives.

The U.S. is considering various options ahead of the tariff deadline, with discussions revolving around not only the proposed 50% tariff but also existing levies on sectors such as automotive and steel industries. Recent proposals from the U.S. aimed to reduce sectoral tariffs, albeit falling short of Canadian expectations.

Amidst the trade tensions, Trump cited concerns over provincial alcohol restrictions, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs as grounds for the tariff threats. Reports suggest that Canada is willing to address these issues in negotiations. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet voiced skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the government to stand firm on dairy negotiations.

Greer mentioned that there are multiple trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, highlighting alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs as key points of contention. Former Canadian ambassador Frank McKenna countered Greer’s stance, emphasizing Canada’s right to defend against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S. in the ongoing trade dispute.
