“Tumbler Ridge School’s Demolition Marks Town’s Healing”

Date:

The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School this week holds a poignant significance for Chris Norbury, a local resident whose wife was present during the tragic mass shooting in February. Norbury, along with numerous community members, witnessed the beginning of the demolition process on Monday, marking a pivotal moment in the town’s recovery journey.

The school, a brown-bricked structure erected in the 1980s to support the coal mining community of Tumbler Ridge, has been a cornerstone for generations of students, fostering cherished memories over four decades. However, following the harrowing events of February 10, both students and teachers expressed a collective desire to not return to the premises, emphasizing the need for closure and healing.

As the community looks towards a new chapter, plans are underway for a temporary campus to host students while preparations for a new school commence. The temporary setup includes modular classrooms, administrative offices, and additional facilities to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. School District 59 board chair Chad Anderson emphasized the priority of providing a secure and structured academic setting for students this fall, with provisions for distance learning for those requiring further support.

Looking ahead, the former school site will be transformed into a grass field, with discussions ongoing regarding permanent memorials and the future use of the property. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the importance of honoring the wishes of the victims’ families in shaping a lasting tribute. The municipality is actively engaging residents in a comprehensive recovery plan, with a focus on community input to address evolving needs.

As the prospect of a new school takes shape, Norbury expressed optimism for the future, underscoring the symbolic closure brought by the demolition of Tumbler Ridge Senior Secondary. The community remains resilient, with a shared commitment to rebuilding and fostering a supportive environment for all residents.
