NASA announced on Wednesday that the attempt to rescue the Swift Observatory has been abandoned, leading to the telescope’s inevitable re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere later this year. Katalyst Space Technologies, in collaboration with NASA, made the decision after encountering difficulties with their Link spacecraft, which was intended to boost Swift to a higher orbit.
Due to issues with controlling the spacecraft, Katalyst confirmed that Link would not be able to capture and maneuver Swift to a safer orbit. Consequently, the telescope, renowned for its two-decade mission of observing gamma ray bursts and stellar explosions, will ultimately descend through the atmosphere, with its demise expected around October.
NASA had allocated $30 million to Katalyst for the rescue mission, aiming to extend Swift’s lifespan by raising it to a more stable orbit. However, heightened solar activity caused the telescope to lose altitude faster than anticipated.
Following its launch in early July, the rescue spacecraft encountered difficulties, spinning out of control shortly after liftoff. Despite efforts to stabilize its trajectory, ongoing issues with the spacecraft’s orientation and positioning persisted.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed disappointment over the outcome but emphasized the significance of the mission attempt. As a silver lining, Katalyst will continue operating Link in close proximity to Swift to showcase its capabilities for potential future rescue missions.
Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee acknowledged the ambitious nature of the mission, highlighting the progress made despite the challenges faced in the project’s condensed timeline.
Originally launched in 2004, Swift had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to slow its descent. Currently orbiting at 345 kilometers above Earth, Katalyst had aimed to return the telescope to its original 600-kilometer orbit to facilitate extended cosmic observations.
In the event of a successful Swift rescue, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope was slated to receive a similar orbital adjustment due to its own orbital decay caused by recent solar events. The status of the 36-year-old Hubble remains uncertain following the conclusion of the Swift rescue mission.
