A warning has been issued to all Aldi customers to be cautious and avoid falling victim to a new scam circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Cybersecurity experts at Malwarebytes have observed a surge in fraudulent posts enticing Aldi shoppers with discounted food boxes in exchange for clicking a link, taking a survey, and entering a prize draw. This “Aldi meat box” scam preys on individuals seeking to save money amidst current cost-of-living challenges.
One post flagged by Malwarebytes claimed that individuals over 40 could purchase an Aldi meat box for under $10, leveraging a false insider tip. Those who engage with these posts are redirected to fake websites where they are prompted to disclose personal and financial details, including credit card information, names, and addresses.
While the scam has primarily affected consumers in Australia and the Netherlands, UK residents are also advised to exercise vigilance. Malwarebytes recommends skepticism towards unrealistic deals, especially those offering high-end products at unusually low prices associated with reputable brands.
Furthermore, consumers are cautioned against narratives involving personal connections to Aldi, as scammers often use these stories to build false credibility and trust. Arbitrary age restrictions, such as targeting individuals over 40, are employed to create a sense of exclusivity and personal relevance.
Scammers employ tactics to induce urgency and portray their schemes as swift and risk-free, pressuring users to act impulsively. Malwarebytes advises individuals to approach social media posts promising premium meat boxes at steep discounts with caution until verified as legitimate. Legitimate retailers typically promote genuine offers through official channels rather than through suspicious posts from anonymous sources.
Consumers are reminded never to disclose sensitive information like credit card details, addresses, or phone numbers via unsolicited social media links, particularly when the offer seems exceptionally generous. It is crucial to remain cautious and discerning while navigating online promotions to safeguard against potential scams.
