“Artemis 2 Mission: NASA Returns to Lunar Exploration”

Date:

The recent launch of the Artemis 2 mission marks NASA’s return to lunar exploration after more than five decades. The four Artemis astronauts bid farewell and boarded the Orion capsule atop NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, departing from the historic site that once launched the Apollo missions to the moon.

Amidst roaring cheers, the Space Launch System rocket ascended into the evening sky, signaling the beginning of the mission. The astronauts were greeted by the captivating sight of a nearly full moon shining approximately 248,000 miles away.

Commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch from NASA, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency form the diverse crew for this historic mission. Notably, this crew includes the first woman, person of color, and non-US citizen to ride in NASA’s new Orion capsule.

During the flight, Commander Reid Wiseman excitedly announced the team’s approach towards the moon, setting a positive tone for the journey. Although there was a temporary communication glitch between Mission Control and the capsule, ground crews swiftly resolved the issue by resetting equipment.

Despite a brief moment of concern during the launch, NASA administrator Jared Isaacman assured the successful continuation of the mission. In the upcoming days, the Orion capsule will surpass the distance record set by Apollo 13, making the Artemis astronauts the most remote travelers in history.

The Artemis mission is scheduled to conclude with a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean on the tenth day of the flight. Navy recovery ships will be on standby off the coast of San Diego to retrieve the Orion capsule as it parachutes back to Earth.
